Alara

Old Croft lived about ten minutes from my den, so Leif and I had time to chat.

I waited for the barrage of insults about my shitty den, but they never came. So, like a little bitch, I goaded him.

“Did you like my den?”

“It was awful,” he said. “It needs repairs. You should fix it.”

My cheeks flamed. “Not all of us are rolling in gold, you know. Not everyone has a Crafter on staff to grow us new walls and furniture. We’re all shifters here in Sylverclyff. Every single one of us ascends into Lupus. We don’t have fae with other powers to help out, like you city folk.”

The arrogant prince kept staring ahead, seemingly engrossed in the perfectly ordinary purple leaves of the Brayson trees. After a moment of silence, he turned to me, a flicker of understanding in his silver eyes. “I never thought of it that way,” he admitted. “I figured all packs had access to stuff, but…I guess not.”

He pulled off a broad shiny leaf from a tree, crushed it in his fingers and handed it to me. “For the stress,” he said.

I narrowed my eyes. “Very pretty.”

“You don’t look at it, you eat it,” he said with a snort.

I accepted the offering and sniffed it suspiciously.

“It’s not poison,” he said. “I promise.”

I wasn’t sure what a promise from Leif was worth, but I didn’t think he was trying to kill me. I popped the crushed purple leaves into my mouth and chewed. They tasted like raspberry licorice but crunchier. As soon as I swallowed, my worries slipped away, sliding off my back like I was made of ice. “What is this?”

“Brayson leaf. Don’t tell me you’ve never used this before? It’s one of the best natural drugs in the realm. And the Realm of Greed and Excess is pretty well off for drugs.”

Man, there was so much I didn’t know. Having been born and raised in a small rural town, my knowledge of the world was limited to what the fae around me knew, or would tell me.

“Haven’t you and your friends chowed down on Brayson and gotten high? It’s the best high there is, but it doesn’t last long,” Leif said, pulling another leaf from the next tree with a pop and munching on it.

“I, er…I don’t exactly have many friends. Apart from Selene, but she’s never mentioned eating Brayson leaves.”

As I chewed on the crushed purple leaves, a magical sensation spread through me, relaxing me and loosening my tongue. Which explained why I admitted to the realm’s chief asshole that I had no friends.

“But you’re a wolf,” he said. “All wolves have friends. That’s kind of our thing.”

I shrugged. “Not me. I’m different.”

He glanced at me. “Yeah, I noticed.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” My eyebrows knitted together, but the frown was only half-hearted—this leaf was good.

Leif hesitated. “It’s just…you’re unlike any other wolf I’ve met. You don’t act like them. You don’t fit in. Even if I was watching you from the moon, I could figure that out.
